Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center Bus Management Solution

Abstract: The Western Transportation Institute was brought in to develop a system for managing the tour buses that visited the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center in Juneau, Alaska. This included buses contracted by the various cruise ship companies that visited Juneau, as well as buses owned by local tour companies. The system was planned to use Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) components to manage the arrival and departures of the buses, to avoid congestion that led to visual and noise pollution (and excessive greenhouse gas emissions) at the Visitor Center.

Sponsoring Organization: Tongass National Forest (US Forest Service)

Completion Date: 1/31/2012

Additional Project Information: The Western Transportation Institute worked on Phase 1 of the project, with Phase 2 being the installation, testing and operational use of the technologies.
